Covering the humanoid announcement from Unitree, and similar products around the world
Unitree announces humanoid robot
Unitree, has announced plans for a humanoid robot named H1. Drawing from its expertise in quadrupeds, Unitree has unveiled a glimpse of the H1 robot through a video announcement on social media. An official release date remains unspecified, but the accompanying video indicates a commercial availability timeframe of 3-10 years. According to reports, the H1 from Unitree is likely to be more affordable (under $90,000) than similar humanoids in development around the world.
Standing at 71 inches (1800mm) and weighing 100 lbs (47kg), the H1 humanoid boasts an internally developed high-torque joint motor and gear train. Its sensory capabilities include a 3D LiDAR sensor and depth camera. The leg joints offer 5 degrees of freedom (DOF), while the arms possess 4 DOF each, albeit without hands in the initial images. According to their website, there are hands being developed with fingers for the H1.
Having established itself as a key player in quadruped development, Unitree recently introduced the Go2 quadruped's second iteration. Go2 represents a highly capable and maneuverable quadruped, at a very reasonable price when compared to the competition. The company has successfully translated its knowledge of leg mechanics and drive systems from quadrupeds to this humanoid product.
A humanoid like this is considered multipurpose. The application of these sorts of robots is seemingly limitless. The ability to replace human labor for a range of activities is ideal for labor and service interests around the world. The fingered hands that are under development will also increase the usefulness for this robot in completing tasks which are normally done by humans.
The announcement of the H1 by Unitree is exciting for the future of humanoid robotics. But, how does it compare to other interesting humanoid robots that are being developed or even those that are presently deployed? The answer isn’t simple, partly due to the fact that only one of these robots is commercially available.
